You say petite syrah, I say sirah.

So last night, my wine of choice for my before bed, my help me wind down, enjoy a relaxing moment with my husband drink-was a 2005 Bogle Petit Sirah.  You can get this wine for the pretty affordable price of $12-15 dollars at the moment.  Now, as I’m a huge fan of merlot and malbecs as of late, this was a bit “lighter” than what I normally prefer.  I think lots of my friends who enjoy wines that aren’t as heavy as those I like, would really enjoy this.  It has a strong berry note with some black pepper/herbs mixed in.  Apparently, this is to drink from now through 2012.In the early days, petit sirah was from vines in California, probably a type of sirah that had small, (hence petit) grapes.  Which by the way is great for winemakers, and much preferred because there’s a high ratio of skin to juice.  Tannin, color and flavor mostly come from a grape’s skin, so small grapes yield wines that are more concentrated with more intense flavor.   Over time, other wines were blended in with those petite sirah vines and created field blends in the same vineyard.  As time went on and in the 1990’s people discovered several possiblities for the heritage of petite sirah.  One thing has become apparent though, petite sirah and sirah are not the same, although they both have the potential to be rich, rustic, wines.  (From The Wine Bible-by Karen MacNeil). Ok, I actually have to work on my full time job now.  ;)
